Seniors Week 09 Nov 6

Overall plan left

Team names:

Decide team names and theme to focus on -- this needs to be decided no later than 2 weeks from now.
For names, this week we'll narrow it down for the 2 teams that are still deciding. Assuming it's one of the ones from the list generated 2 weeks ago, we'll go with that. If not, we'll run it past those missing one more time for online input. It needs to be final by next week, regardless of who's there.
LEGO XMen -- name set
Ryan, Canaan, Jeremy

LEGO Indians or LEGO History
Delta, AJ, Ari, Levi, Gray

Haunted House, Haunted City Titanic, Super LEGO People, Super Dog, Titanic, DJZooM, Alvin & the Chipmunks
Demetrius, Jamie, Zane, Mark

Tshirt design

This week:
Need a design for "JrFLL at the Forge" and a decision about tshirt colors -- if more than one to choose from, we can send them out via vote or comment by email and have a decision by the end of the week so we can send the design to Kimi.

Designing buttons:
If your kids want to play around with some designs, the templates are here -- we use the 2 1/4 inch round size.

We'll assume the button designs and the team-specific part of the tshirts will be the same...

Team topic themes:

Using the timelines to start with, I'd like them to look at all the timelines this week and talk about what the background inventions were -- and brainstorm some future ideas that their grandparents would enjoy using or find helpful (it needs to come back to seniors somehow!).
During the week they can research one item from the past on their theme and bring it in next week to start pulling things together for their display board.
Overall moving from theme choice to having a model:
1. Decide theme
2. Discuss / hands-on / think about: overall trend in that theme or a specific theme

For the 2 younger teams:

  • each child chooses one step in the development of the technology:
  • at home: research it -- bring in a photo or two for the display board about that step or learn more about the how and why of that step
  • build a lego model of it (at home or one class -- with or without moving parts -- maybe the team can focus on one thing to build together from the past?)
  • ask grand parents about that invention -- any good stories or what they remember about it? what was cool, what was easy to use, etc. -- include that on the board
  • As a team, brainstorm what their technology might look like in the future -- decide how to build this component together and be able to list points about it (gets captured on the display board)

Stretch goal -- can they figure out how to incorporate a motor and WeDo to show that technology as a group

For the older team -- it would be great to be able to talk through this part with them to design what they think should go on their board showing a previous technology and a future technology that would solve a problem seniors have -- but can fall back to this plan if we need to.
Suggestion? Thoughts????
